Hermit Crabs - Science!

One of the six hermit crabs now residing on my kitchen counter.  Two per boy.  We feed them earthworms - or rather, Charles and Thomas feed them earthworms.  I myself don't touch them. Their names are, respectively:  Camo and Charles, Camo and Thomas, Camo and Daniel.  Maybe we aren't totally creative when it comes to naming our animals...but at least there's not a lot to remember!

The boys caught these at low tide at a local beach and we have had a good time observing them.  I only plan on keeping them another week or so, then we'll release them back into the wild.  But this is part of FunMom for me, letting my kids keep hermit crabs.

I have an awesome book called "Pets In A Jar" that tells how to take care of several pets that would fit in a gallon size jar.  Now when my boys find something small and they want to take it home, I can say "okay!"  And it can provide us with hours of science observation.  Which makes me a really good homeschool mom, I'm pretty sure.

Yes, hermit crabs qualify you as both a fun mom and a good homeschooling mom, for sure!

Hi fun mom. I was a homeschool mom for over 12 years..loved every moment of it. Now I'm getting ready to step into the classroom as an elementary school teacher come August. I'm excited. I clicked on the Amazon link for habitats in a jar. This will be a great asset for mini habitats of living things for my classroom...thanks for the link.

that is so cute. It's nice to know that boys are boys everywhere. My son named his hermit crabs the same. Usually something that described his shell, like football, brown poky shell. . . They are cute!
