The Big 0-4

My sweet baby turned 4 two days ago!

As you may recall from this post, Charles has been anxiously awaiting his birthday since the rest of our family had ours in June. Though he was not, in fact, wearing Lightning McQueen underwear, pants, or even a Cars shirt, he did manage to have a Lightning McQueen birthday.
I pulled off this little Lightning McQueen cake - I had the scene of he and Sally cruising along the mesas in the back of my mind. Though I can't compete with Erin's cake, and maybe you have to squint to be able to tell that Lightning and Sally are supposed to be looking out over the dessert from a mesa - Charles thought it was amazing.

It's so fun to see him growing and his little mind developing. Conversation with him tonight:

Charles: Is Jesus in the moon, mama?
Me: Yes, he's watching you, telling you he's taking care of you.
Charles: And you. And Thomas. And Daddy.
Me: Yes, he's watching all of us.
Charles: Even in Bali? (that's where Charlie is now)
Me: Yes, he's taking care of Daddy in Bali.
Charles: (after slight pause) Are there two Jesus's?

Hmmm. How do you explain omnipresence to a four-year-old? Well, I think I covered it: "It seems like there would have to be two Jesus's, but there is only one and he can be everywhere and see everything." Put that in your pipe and smoke it, sweetie. I wonder what he thinks after these little conversations?

Hi Charles,
Happy Birthday! Hannah and Naomi would have loved to be there for your birthday party but they were sad they were too far away to come. But we hope it went well and your cake looked really cool! And tell your little brother Thomas thanks for the ice creams he convinced your dad to buy us the other day. It was yummy and we all thought about you and thomas and your mommy and little brother or sister to come. Hope to see you all again sometime.

Ohhh, lovely cake! I knew it was a mesa when I saw the picture. So much nicer than Nipomo, too.:)

And.... I'm shocked, SHOCKED to think that you advocate children smoking!

Hmm, where's my wit? Why can't I think of something amusing to say? Something like, "well, he doesn't really smoke pipes, they're a little too sophisticated. We're starting him out with plain old cigs...we'll move up from there." ??

(this from a girl who hasn't touched a cigarette in her life. I wasn't even allowed to have the candy ones when I was little).
