Embassy Visit

I had to go to the U.S. Embassy today for some passport stuff. I'm not sure what I expected, maybe something like you see in the movies: a large, imposing building; bustling activity; armed guards; Americans; maybe some sort of riotous crowd out front...well, it wasn't like that.

Now, I have little "embassy experience", so I don't claim to be an expert, but this was definitely not what I expected. No sign indicated that the obscure building was an embassy of any sort. Of the three people that I saw there only one spoke English. But they were all very kind and helpful. They all loved the boys. And there was a very nice bathroom there - with a western bathtub. Not something you usually see when you're out and about. I could have just thrown in the boys for a little mid-day scrub.

As I was waiting at a window for some paperwork I happened to look at the wall in the back of the office. Smiling down at me in a fatherly way was our President, Mr. George W. Bush. Next to him were pictures of Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice. Here was something. I felt a slight connection to home, as if these were pictures of old friends. I'm not sure I would have even noticed at some random office in the States; but here, where Americans are few and far between, it was a nice little reminder of the fine country I come from.

I wonder what they're going to do with those pics when the election comes around? Maybe I could take them to my house. We have a wall that could use some friendly faces.

After the embassy visit we went swimming, as we so often do now. The weather is getting warmer, as is the pool water. Here is a video of some of our latest tricks. Enjoy!

or maybe I am experiencing technical difficulties and it's a video of the boys talking to each other on their shoes? I'll figure it out.

It's nice to have a feeling of home. I kind of think that is why people visit McDonald's wherever they go. Just a theory. Happy travelings to you, btw.

it's why we go to McDonald's when we're here, that's for sure. We definitely went more when we first got here.

I love the video of the boys! It's too cute!

Well I have been to another embassy. IT was a lot crazier than the one you are describing. There were hundreds of people waiting in line trying to get a Visa and many people asking us to help them.

I'm glad you guys felt a little bit of home.

I can't wait to see pictures of all our nieces and nephews at Halloween!
