Trains

Waiting for the train with Grammy and Grandpa.
Here it comes!Charles and Grammy on the train.

Paul Simon sings: "Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance..." and that's definitely true at our house. We especially love the sound of the train across the street.

At our house we rise to a state of euphoria every time the train goes by, and we don't want to miss watching it out our balcony or window. I would have thought the excitement would wear off over time, but it's been just under a year now and the love of trains has not ebbed. Watching a good train-passing ranks right up there with Nemo.

In honor of our trains, Charlie & I have wanted to take the boys on a little train trip before we move. So when my parents got here for a weekend visit we all arose early on Saturday morning and drove a couple blocks to catch the 7:05am train to Santa Barbara (It's not like we're not up that early anyway).

What a blast! The boys were in 7th heaven. Charles stood close to the tracks calling the train: "Come on train, I'm ready! I'm waitin' for you. I'm gonna ride the train!" We spent a delightful two hours on the train enjoying the ocean view on one side and rolling hills on the other. Thomas said "cow", he was so excited to see them from the window.

The rest of the day was spent making our way back home via a rental mini-van. A Santa Barbara breakfast, some beach time (because you can never spend too much time at the beach!), a short Solvang detour, and a delicious meal at the Hitching Post in Casmalia. What a day! Boy were we tired when we got home. Tired and happy!

Looks like you had fun on the train. Your parents told us about your exciting adventure home. :) Glad you all had a good time.

I'm so happy for your family to have finally done the big train ride. Hitching Post sounds like a good time for mom and dad, too. I'm so glad you're blogging - I wanted to see pictures and hear about the trip. See you in a few hours for Thanksgiving. Love, Audrey

What a fun time!! My family's favorite haunt is the Far Western in Guadalupe.

Or Jack's in Orcutt - which is where my parents are going for Thanksgiving dinner today! (Dad just got out of the hospital with a broken leg and mom doesn't feel like cooking).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Doh! I can't believe I missed seeing your booklist over there-----> !~ very cool.

Re: Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.... one of the things I REALLY Liked about that book is that there were some serious consequences for that cheeky soccer chick in her pursuit of the counselor. It wasn't just a free trip to Paradise... there was lasting emotional baggage that resulted (it carries through most of the second book). That doesn't come up too often in teen lit.
