Ode to Slurpee

After school on Fridays my best friend, Sara, and I walked to 7-11. We bought Slurpees, and tons of candy. You can do that when you're in junior high. You can consume the extra-large Slurpee, plus a long Red Vine Rope, plus a pack of Starbursts, plus popcorn that night, plus whatever else takes your fancy, and nobody says anything. And your body doesn't even flinch. It just whisks all that candy and junk away to some magical junior high body place. Whoosh.

Now I'm not typically interested in eating that much candy. But even if I think about the occasional pack of dark chocolate M&Ms (which are practically health food, you know), I can often talk myself out of it. That does say something about my self-discipline, which has hopefully been strengthened since junior high; but it's mostly about the fact that I want to be able to actively enjoy my kids for several more years - and that bag of M&M's is the first step on the road to 500lbs. and sedentary-ness. Sort of. But I still indulge more than I maybe should.

Like yesterday when we stopped at a gas station. And I got a Tootsie Pop for someone small, and some Jolly Ranchers for my husband, then I stood around thinking...."hmmm, what does my pregnant self want? Anything?" And my eyes fell on the Slurpee machine.

I thought of Sara, and her five kids. "gotta call her soon". I thought of all of our fun junior high times. I remembered that I haven't done anything quite so decadent in quite a while. And I then decided that a Wild Cherry/Coca Cola Slurpee was exactly what my pregnant self wanted. So I got one. And it was de-lish.

Then the Slurpee juice made it's way down to the baby and about half-way through I realized it was THE MOST DISGUSTING THING ever made by man.

Pregnancy is funny that way. So Charlie was the glad recipient of half a Slurpee. And I curled up in the side of the truck and tried to get as far from it as possible. Luckily, being a bit of a seasoned pregnant lady at this point, I am not writing off Slurpees all-together. I realize that nine months from now, I may thoroughly enjoy a Slurpee, heck, maybe even three months, but I won't be trying it soon.

I love it. Too true. Who takes a break from being a grown-up and eats candy anymore? Last week I had a rare night to myself and went to the movies by myself. And I ate popcorn. With butter. And a hot dog. It was pure heaven.
Thanks for this post. Very funny!

oh, the fickle pregancy stomach! don't worry, as you know, soon comes the "i can eat anything i want--i'm pregnant!" phase. i do miss that part....

p.s.-- you may know this already, but ginger in its many forms was helpful to me with the yuckiness factor. that, and eating every 30 seconds or so.

OHHH. I miss that 7-11!!! :) That is sooo fun to remember you and Sara and all our friends.

Will you still be in Sac Dec 1-Dec 6? We are thinking of taking a drive. :)

AAAAAH! You're pregnant!!!! Lucky!!

Not that I'm trying or anything, but I am so glad for you!

You know all that food goes right to the baby, right? It doesn't go to you at all. Heh heh.

When I was pregnant the first time, I wanted fried eggs and watermelon ALL the time. Weird, right? So your Slurpee is positively normal, even if you only enjoyed half of it. :)

When are you due then? Or maybe I need to read the next post down where doubtless you announced your joy.

Okay, popcorn and a hotdog? I am in. Once I read that I decided I needed to plan a night out for me. By myself. To a movie.

Christy - what kind of ginger did you eat? pieces of the root, or did you blend it with something? I've never really felt the queasiness that seems to be so regular with this baby, so it's new to me. With the boys there were food aversions and there was definitely exhaustion, but not the queasyness...

K - yes we'll be in Sac. Please do take a drive. I would soooo love to get together.

Erin - due July 7 (don't know if I did post that on the next post), and I wish the food went right to the baby - on me it often gets sidetracked to other unseemly places.

Hahaha you might as well be talking about me. I seem to have the same love/hate relationship with M&M's. They aren't even that good...but the combination of chocolate and happy colors does me in.

I hope you feel generally fine. I know I hated absolutely every food and hated the fact that we had to eat to survive for about 3 or 4 months. Ginger never worked for me, but I hope it helps you! :)

Your ode to slurpee was perfectly timed. I too just made the 7-11 trip (Nathan had a free slurpee coupon). You will be happy to hear that I introduced him to the wild cherry/coca cola mixture too - it has been handed down to the next generation. Although I did not get one for myself I did help Logan finish his. Rylie, surprisingly, took two sips and asked for her apple juice. It was definately a reminder of just how sweet those things are.

Glad you are back safe. Keep us posted on what lies aheaad.

christy, sorry it has been so long to get back to you!

1. about the ginger: if you have access to a healthfood store, they should have ginger in many forms. tea, candy, powder, sometimes even capsules. even gingerale or gingersnaps made with real ginger (check the label). of course, there is always the homely root, the 'real thing', and that is usually available at any supermarket. if you don't have access to a healthfood store where you are, let me know, and i'll send you some different forms in the mail! hope you feel better soon.

2. apple butter! hope i'm not too late. here's the recipe from the canning book that i use--if you're canning it, stay close to the recipe...if you're just making a little to keep in the fridge/freezer, then you can get creative. ;)

4lbs apples
4 cups sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves

wash apples. if you have a food mill, you don't have to peel/core, but i don't, so i do. actually, this last time i just cored and then put it all through the blender after cooking, which seemed to get most of the chunks out. but, purists would peel.
add 2 cups of water and cover, simmering until soft. (this is the point where the blender would come in, should you be a peeling-shirker like myself.) measure 2 quarts of apple pulp.

combine pulp, sugar and spices in a large saucepot. cook slowly until thick enough to round up on a spoon. (this is a canning term, they really mean that it is no longer runny, but kind of pours off in a big sheet from the spoon, kind of thickly.) stir frequently! ladel hot butter into hot jars, leaving 1/4inch headspace (distance to rim of jar). adjust caps and process 10 min in a boiling water canner (or big pot). add more time above sea level--about 5 min per 3000ft.
yield: 5 pints.

let me know if you need a ginger shipment!
