More books

Hee hee, it worked. I just "copy and pasted" from Annecourager's website. I'm pretty amazed when anything I try actually works while blogging.

I have chosen not to do memes for a long time, but since I AM a book-lover I couldn't pass this up. (When I was younger my mom had "rules" for when I could read books. i.e.: not at my little bros baseball games, not in the car with friends - can you believe she had to make a rule for that?)

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Anything but mass market paperback - my rule? if an author can write 5 books in two years I probably won't be reading them.
Amazon or brick and mortar?
Either/or.
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
I love to browse in either one, but if I'm going to buy a new book it's going to be bought on Amazon - their deals can't be beat.
Bookmark or dogear?
Bookmark
Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
By subject.
Keep, throw away, or sell?
Keep! Keep! Keep! I try to keep the collection thinned down to the "most important", but I can't get rid of my hardback copies, nor the books I know I'll read again and recommend to others.
Keep dustjacket or toss it?
I have to keep it, won't the book police jump out from some bushes when you take out your trash with a dustjacket in it?
Read with dustjacket or remove it?
With, also a handy bookmark until you're over 1/4 of the way through the book and it starts getting warped from the volume of the pages.
Short story or novel?
Novel.
Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Mmm, I don't usually like short stories. Honestly, I don't usually "get" them. I took a class on Hemingway and Fitzgerald in college and never quite derived what everyone else derived from Hemingway's short stories. They were interesting, but I'd rather read one of his books.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Haven't read them yet. I saw the Lemony Snicket movie and was amused, but thought it was too dark for children. I wasn't impressed enough to read the book.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Depends on the book.
“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
Once upon a time...now that I'm a mom I don't have extra emotions to waste on reading or movies. The majority of my entertainment choices are upbeat. Plus, if anything sad happens to a child in the book I'm immediately a basket-case.
Buy or Borrow?
Do I have birthday money left?
New or used?
Mostly used. I love used bookstores.
Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
All.
Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Tidy ending
Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
How good is the book? Most often, nighttime - sometimes during the boy's naptime.
Stand-alone or series?
Both.
Favorite series?
Anne of Green Gables and The Little House books should all be read at least once every few years - also The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Andrew McCall Smith
Favorite children's book?
The Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
A Long, Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott - it sounds like a trashy romance, but is sooo far from it. I ran across it in an obscure library and now own a copy found at some rummage sale. Love it. Love it. Love it.
Favorite book read last year?
Anna Karenina
Favorite book of all time?
Pride And Prejudice (this should be read once a year), Forever Amber
Least favorite book you finished last year?
The Rice Mother by Rani Manicka - actually an amazing story and very well-written, so well-done that I got too emotionally involved in the story. A little too much for me at this time in my life. I'm not counting the "Quickbooks 2006 Guide". If we're being honest, that was my least favorite, but I had to do it - and in the end, I'm glad I did.
What are you reading right now?
Les Miserables
What are you reading next?
something light and fun, any recommendations?

Okay, I didn't know there were so many "rules" for those who love to read. It's a good thing I know you as well as I do, otherwise, I might be apt to think you were a bit "snooty" (and I know you're not!) But really...I do like most of Grisham's books and I know you don't. I also love almost all of the books you've recommended and I did read Les Mis, but I'm certain, not the version you are reading.
With that said, I'm glad you are not the "snooty" girl you sound like. I'm glad you love God, Charlie, Charles and Thomas, and,of course country music.

Ooops, I didn't mean to sound snooty. That's no good. I better get this post further down the page pretty quickly.

(Could I ever give up country music? Especially "old" country?)

LOL oh my, I was weaned on Hank Williams, I think. Does that count as "old" country?? :)

We share many of the same book likes and dislikes, I see! And your comment about not having enough emotion to spare for the "dark and stormy night" -- I totally agree.

I'll have to give the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency a lookover. :) I am woefully out of it when it comes to "grownup" books; I read mostly children's and YA lit when I go browsing.

And sorry, Christy's mom, I don't like Grisham very much either. But my mom loves him. :)
